That time of day rolls around and the beasts in the house realize that their master will soon be driving up the driveway. They get antsy. They paw at the door. They become generally restless. So I let them out and tell them to stay there.
I'm talking about the dogs, not the kids!
Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes they sit and wait in the snow until they start to collect it on their backs.
Sometimes they decide after a minute or two that I have in fact fooled them and HE is not coming up the driveway. So they bark and paw until I let them back inside.
Then, after about a minute, they decide they want to go back out.
Most nights this happens a lot. They go in and out, in and out. They have me well-trained.
Then, when HE is in fact coming up the drive they tear down the driveway and follow him up to our neighbors house while he delivers her mail. They're excited and they're fast and it is so fun to watch them run full-out like that.
They love their papa.
And we love them.
